Masla boxes in South India were once a box divided into 5 (Anji – five, arai- boxes) to keep the vital spices you used daily handy, and away from moisture and contamination of your larger stock. This later morphed into the current one pictured here. Each region in India has its own spices that are stored in similar boxes.
